OUR MISSION

People Tree is a pioneer in ethical and sustainable fashion.

People Tree aims to be 100% Fair Trade throughout our supply chain. People Tree purchases Fair Trade products from marginalised producer groups in the developing world. We guarantee the majority of all our purchasing is Fair Trade and is committed to the World Fair Trade Organization Fair Trade standards

We achieve this through the following:
  • TO SUPPORT producer partners’ efforts towards economic independence and control over their environment and to challenge the power structures that undermine their rights to a livelihood.
  • TO PROTECT the environment and use natural resources sustainably throughout our trading and to promote environmentally responsible initiatives to create new models to promote sustainability.
  • TO SUPPLY customers with good quality products, with friendly and efficient service, and build awareness to empower customers and producers to participate in Fair Trade and environmentally sustainable solutions.
  • TO PROVIDE a supportive environment to all stakeholders and promote dialogue and understanding between them.
  • TO SET AN EXAMPLE to business and the government of a Fair Trade model of business based on partnership, people-centred values and sustainability.

OUR STANDARDS

People Tree is an active member of many Fair Trade, social justice and environmental networks. We are accredited by the WFTO, the Fairtrade Foundation, and the Soil Association. While many fashion brands talk about ethical fashion, these credentials mean you can trust how our products are made.

FAIR TRADE CREDENTIALS

WFTOSince 1996 People Tree has been a registered and highly involved member of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO). We also initiated World Fair Trade Day, endorsed by WFTO and the only global Fair Trade event, celebrated in 70 countries worldwide.

WFTO is an internationally recognised organisation that aims to improve the livelihoods of disadvantaged producers, by linking and promoting Fair Trade organisations and speaking out for greater justice in World Trade. WFTO members take part in regular reviews to ensure that they meet WFTO standards.

Like all WFTO members, Fair Trade is at the heart of People Tree's mission and we make sure that we comply with the 10 standards of Fair Trade.

FAIRTRADE certifiedIn addition, most of People Tree's organic cotton carries the FAIRTRADE Mark. This guarantees small scale cotton farmers in developing countries receive a fair and stable price and an additional premium which gives them the opportunity to develop their communities.

A few of our organic cotton items do not carry this mark because they are made with a high quality cotton fibre, which is not yet grown by an approved producer in India. People Tree is initiating new organic Fairtrade cotton projects in Bangladesh, so that so that in future our handwoven cotton can carry the FAIRTRADE mark.

ECOLOGICAL CREDENTIALS

People Tree has promoted organic cotton farming for over ten years, and all our organic fibre is certified in India by Control Union (an international Dutch based organic certification body).

Soil AssociationOur organic cotton clothing is certified by the Soil Association too. This guarantees that our manufacturing processes also meets Global Organic Textile Standards. So, if you see the mark beside the colour of the garment on our site, you can be assured that every step of the production process, from sewing the cotton seeds to shipping a t-shirt to your doorstep, has been carefully inspected to ensure organic standards.

Organic CottonOur new colours for organic clothing now meet stringent requirements for organic dyes.

Some of our organic cotton products don't carry the mark, even though they use low impact dyes. This is because the screen print workshop we use is a small family run business that we didn't want to desert for the sake of certification. We're supporting them so that they can meet the organic criteria soon.

Natural DyesWe also work hard to ensure that we pioneer sustainable methods of production to minimise environmental impact. Not only is most of our cotton certified organic and Fairtrade, all our clothes are dyed using safe GOTS certified and azo-free dyes.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION

The people we work with have some of the smallest environmental footprints in the world.

They live and work in communities without most essentials of modern life – including electricity. They buy very few consumer goods, eat locally produced food and use hand production methods to earn their living. What's more, many are directly threatened by the environmental impact of our lifestyles and buying habits in the West - the pollution from goods manufactured for us and global warming arising from power we consume. Environmental justice, this is not.

The rest of our environmental policy is pretty straightforward. We promote natural and organic cotton farming. And we avoid using damaging chemicals in production (where possible, we use recycled and biodegradable substances instead). Also, we try to recycle everything we can, and always aim to protect water supplies and forests in the environments we work in.

Basically, if there's a green way to do something, that's the way we try to do it.

OVERVIEW OF OUR ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

  • To promote natural and organic farming
  • To avoid polluting substances
  • To protect water supplies
  • To use biodegradable substances where possible
  • To recycle materials where possible
