Assisi Garments is based in South India. Assisi Garments makes many of People Tree’s most popular pieces in soft organic and Fairtrade certified cotton, from wrap dresses to leggings to tees.
Assisi Garments buys organic cotton that is Fairtrade certified from Agrocel farmers in Gujurat, India and then transforms the cotton fibre into beautiful fabric and handmade garments.
The close partnership between People Tree and Assisi Garments meant that ours was the first supply chain entirely in the developing world to achieve the Soil Association Global Organic Textile Standards mark.
Assisi Garments is one of the first social businesses that People Tree worked with. Set up by Franciscan nuns, it provides training and employment for deaf, mute and economically disadvantaged women.
Assisi Garments provides a haven for these women to work and live in and a safe and supportive environment. Women are paid a fair wage. After three to five years of employment, the women build up their savings and receive a bonus that allows them to start a home and often their own tailoring business.
Thanks to support and regular orders from People Tree, Assisi Garments has grown from 8 to over 100 employees.
Assisi Garments produces excellent quality garments and designer collaborations with internationally renowned fashion designers such as Orla Kiely, Peter Jensen and Bora Aksu.
In addition to reinvesting profits to grow their business and create more jobs, Assisi Garments supports a cancer hospital and old people's home in South India.
