TREES SAVE LIVES

PEOPLE TREE PRODUCES EXCLUSIVE VIVIENNE WESTWOOD DRESS FOR MARIE CLAIRE'S GLOBAL RAINFOREST APPEAL

When Vivienne Westwood joined forces with Marie Claire International to launch an exciting global project against deforestation they called upon People Tree to help them.

Rainforests play a vital role in maintaining a stable global climate and environment; they are vital to the survival of all 7 billion of us. Deforestation is one of the largest contributors to climate change. Forests are on the global agenda with the UN General Assembly declaring 2011 as the International year of Forests. This important year will hopefully raise awareness and promote global action to sustainably manage, conserve and develop all types
of forests.

To mark this year of change, Vivienne Westwood has designed a limited edition T-shirt dress exclusively for Marie Claire. Being pioneers of social and environmental justice in the fashion industry People Tree was asked to hand produce the T-shirt dress.

The T-shirt dress is 100% organic and Fair Trade and made by Assisi in India. Using azo free dyes the
design by Vivienne Westwood has been screen
printed by hand.

This Vivienne Westwood limited edition T-shirt dress is available for only £28 and £7 from each sale will be donated to The Society for Environment and Human Development*, a charity that directly helps the Garo women from Bangladesh, whose lives and livelihoods have been endangared by deforestation.

The personal stories from the women of the Garo tribe in the hills of Bangladesh are told through a moving feature by Abigal Haworth published in nearly all June 2011 editions of Marie Claire Worldwide. This feature forms part of Marie Claire's rainforest special guest edited by Vivienne Westwood, inspiring readers to act
against deforestation.

"How can humans be
happy? For every tree they
cut down a future child dies
and there are more trees
than children. Some people
know these things but they
plan to end the rainforest
in one generation."

"Thanks to commercial
greed, illegal logging and
official corruption, huge
numbers of native forest
dwellers have been evicted
from their homes,
often violently."
