World Fair Trade Day 2008: Environment

Make the Climate right for Fair Trade

Fair Trade is a force for protecting the environment and sustainable development. Fair Trade favours the use of natural sustainably harvested materials and hand production methods, production methods which have a low carbon footprint. Because Fair Trade pays a fair price and works in long term partnerships it enables producer partners, to invest in environmentally friendly production processes, these initiatives promote environmental awareness locally.

Justice for the South - Fair Trade communities of the developing world have amongst the lightest environmental footprints. But these are the very people whose food security, livelihoods and homes are most threatened by climate change. Fair Trade is a system that puts people and environment central to its trading partnerships for environmental justice. Fair Trade has helped millions escape from poverty and we don't want environmental injustice to undermine livelihoods and poverty further. The Fair Trade communities of the South call on northern consumers to change their lifestyles and shopping habits.
